Why is my BMW 3 Series engine making a loud knocking noise at idle?

I recently noticed that my BMW 3 Series engine makes a loud knocking noise when I am idling at a stoplight. It seems to go away when I start driving again. What could be causing this and is it something I should be worried about?

It is likely that your engine is experiencing a faulty or worn out bearing which is causing the knocking noise. This can happen naturally over time and is not necessarily something to be worried about, but it is important to have it checked by a mechanic to prevent any further damage to your engine.

Another possible cause could be low engine oil levels. Check your oil dipstick to make sure your oil levels are within the appropriate range. If they are low, be sure to top off your oil and monitor it closely in the future to ensure it does not happen again.

If the knocking noise persists, it could also be an issue with your fuel injectors. They may need to be cleaned or replaced in order to prevent the knocking noise. It is best to have a professional examine them for proper functioning.
