What type of fuel should I use for my 2020 BMW 2 Series?

I recently purchased a 2020 BMW 2 Series and I'm unsure about what type of fuel I should be using. The manual says 'premium fuel recommended', but is it necessary or can I use regular? I've heard conflicting opinions from friends and family.
