Is it normal for the BMW 3 Series to have loud engine noise?

I recently purchased a used BMW 3 Series and I've noticed that the engine tends to make a lot of noise, even at low speeds. It's not a grinding or knocking sound, just a loud hum. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it normal for this model?
