Why is the engine on my BMW M4 making a strange knocking noise?

I've noticed that whenever I start the engine on my BMW M4, there is a strange knocking noise coming from under the hood. It seems to go away after a few minutes of driving. What could be causing this and is it something I need to be concerned about?
