The engine light could be on due to various reasons such as a faulty oxygen sensor, a loose gas cap, or even a problem with the catalytic converter. It is important to get this checked by a professional mechanic as soon as possible.

Do you notice any other unusual symptoms such as strange noises or a decrease in performance? If so, it could indicate a more serious issue. It is always best to err on the side of caution and have it checked by a trusted mechanic.

Have you recently replaced the battery in your BMW M3? Sometimes a weak battery can trigger the engine light. Try replacing it and see if the light goes off.
