Why is my BMW X3 making a strange noise when I turn on the AC?

Whenever I turn on my BMW X3's air conditioning, I hear a strange noise coming from the engine. It seems to go away after a few minutes of driving, but I'm worried it could be a bigger issue. What could be causing this noise?
