Why does my BMW X3's engine make a ticking sound?

I have recently noticed a ticking sound coming from my BMW X3's engine. It is not constant, but seems to occur more frequently when the car is idling. Is this something I should be worried about?

Hi Jane, that ticking sound is most likely caused by a worn out lifter or valve in your engine. It is important to have this checked out by a mechanic as soon as possible, as it could lead to more serious damage if left unchecked.
