Why does my BMW 1 Series make a strange noise when I turn on the AC?

Whenever I turn on the AC in my BMW 1 Series, I hear a strange noise coming from the engine. It almost sounds like a squealing noise. What could be causing this? Is it something I need to get fixed right away?
