Is shifting into neutral while driving bad for my BMW M3's transmission?

I've heard mixed opinions on whether shifting into neutral while driving is harmful to a BMW M3's transmission. Some say it helps improve fuel efficiency, others say it can cause unnecessary strain on the transmission. Can you clarify the best practice for shifting into neutral while driving in my M3?

Shifting into neutral while driving can actually be harmful to your BMW M3's transmission. When you take your foot off the gas and shift into neutral, the engine no longer has resistance to slow down the vehicle, which means the brakes have to work harder. This can cause extra wear and tear on your brakes, and may even lead to brake failure in extreme cases. It's best to keep your car in gear while driving.

While it may seem like shifting into neutral would improve fuel efficiency, it actually has the opposite effect in a BMW M3. When coasting in neutral, the engine continues to use fuel to keep idling, whereas when in gear, the fuel is cut off completely. So unless you're coming to a complete stop, it's better to keep your car in gear while driving.
