How to fix a malfunctioning iDrive system in a BMW XM?

The iDrive system in my BMW XM keeps freezing and not responding to my commands. What could be causing this issue and how can I fix it?

It is possible that there is a software glitch in the iDrive system. Try resetting the system by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. If that doesn't work, try updating the software.
